CCHP Artist-in-RESIDENCY PROGRAM| SUBSIDIZED HOUSING (2016-2018)
This fall, up to five local artists will be selected to receive subsidized housing through 2018. The residency will allow each artist an extremely affordable live/work environment while engaging their creative skills for the greater good. In exchange, each recipient will complete four weekly hour of arts-based youth outreach through TCP's Community Arts Program (CAP). While in the program residents will also receive promotional support, exhibition opportunities and professional development. In essence, you give your time and we give you space as you become part of our team of creative change agents.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1. Can I apply if I live out of state?
You must reside in the metropolitan Atlanta upon acceptance into the program. The application includes a list of eligible counties.
2. Am I allowed to travel during the residency?
Absolutely! We understand that you may have special occasions or even other residencies to travel for during the 2yr residency period. We simply require that you notify us ahead of time and that missed outreach hours are made up at a later date. We fully support your creative endeavors and understand that your ability to travel is a big part of building your career as an artist!
3. What happens if I must move during the 2 year period?
We know it is possible for your lives to take a turn or require a shift in direction. If you must move away from Atlanta your space will be given to an alternate candidate as we wish you well on your new adventure!
4. Am I allowed to participate in other residencies, exhibitions, and programs while in residence with TCP?
We are here to support artists careers! Therefore, we encourage our residents build their experiences through inclusion in exhibitions and other career support programs. We DO NOT, however, allow artists to double-dip for specific resources. For instance; An artist applying for TCP studio space/housing cannot be receiving a similar formal subsidy elsewhere. If the artist produces any work that receives support for its development through the residency and such work appears in an exhibition or public performance, the artist must ensure that TCP receives acknowledgment by including language substantially similar to the following: “This work has been supported in part by The Creatives Project, a 501(c)3 organization | This body of work was created during The Creatives Project Artist-in-Residency Program.”
5. I noticed that most of the programs appear to be more visual art driven, and I am a dancer/choreographer. Are there more facilitative roles behind the scenes?
We look forward to expanding our reach to support all creative types so we encourage the participation of creative genres outside the visual arts with the understanding that establishing your outreach programing may require more of a time commitment from you and extra support from our team to create an outreach experience in your genre from the ground up. 6. I was wondering if this program extends to music producers/musicians.
Although we have never had resident musicians in the studio program, we are open to the idea. However, the current studios we have to offer are most ideal for visual artists. These shared spaces are situated in a charming old factory and although there are walls, the spaces lack ceilings and therefore sound proofing. The floor is shared with other paying tenants so we have a responsibility to follow certain sound ordinances. With all of that being said, we are constantly expanding our resources and often acquire new space in the midst of a residency term that allows us to better meet the needs of Atlanta's creative class. In those mid-term instances we reach out to previous applicants to help fill our newly acquired spaces. We encourage you to apply as our programs are in a constant state of growth and our vision includes supporting all types of creatives... producers, musicians, writers, dancers, actors, you name it!
7. I just wanted to know more about what you all considered performance. I am a writer for the stage and screen. I write for performance. Usually plays, spoken word poetry, live sketch comedy and standup. The play that I recently finished involves poetry, visual art and dance. But my main form of creation is writing. Would you all consider this within the guidelines of the types of artist you are looking for?
We consider dance, movement, stage drama, and artists whose work is performative in nature : performance based art. The end products/ adaptations of your work could be presented as your visual examples, however we suggest this is clearly explained in your application. Also, being that you are performance writer, how do you plan on utilizing the studio space? This may be a good question to address in your application as our residency has focused on supporting visual arts in the past. It may be helpful for the the review panel to better understand how the studio space could alternatively support the work of a writer working towards creating a visual outcome and how accessing the awarded space is crucial to your creative process as well. 8. Will I be required to teach the "Educational Program Proposal" that is submitted with my application?
Not necessarily. Although many of our previous residents have teaching experience, many of them do not. This section of the application helps us gain an understanding of where you fall on the arts instruction spectrum and your level of creativity/ enthusiasm when it comes to teaching your craft. Your Educational Program Proposal may or may not be utilized for instruction during outreach and in some cases can be modified to better fit the needs of our outreach beneficiaries.
9. I have an organization in mind for my outreach. Can this organization be my outreach beneficiary?
It is possible but not guaranteed that the organization you have in mind will be approved as your outreach beneficiary. TCP maintains a roster of beneficiary organizations who have been nominated or selected based on specific outreach population guidelines. We are currently looking to expand our reach into highly under served neighborhoods in Metro Atlanta by offering support to communities and organizations with very high concentrations of children living in low income situations who may also have disabilities or other developmental delays. We are always open to providing our support to different organizations as long as they meet our beneficiary requirements.
10. Should one be chosen for the residency, is there a cooperative conversation about developing a working community outreach proposal?
We are open to developing a new community outreach proposal with the selected artist, as long as the artist is aware that this may take more of a time commitment on their behalf as starting a brand new program with new program partners and programming goals can be a bit more labor intensive.
11. Is outreach every week?
Yes, however, outreach primarily aligns with public school schedules. Although most outreach is scheduled weekly, breaks are provided during holidays. During summer vacation outreach becomes less frequent. You are also given time off leading up to shows and exhibitions to allow more studio time for preparation. When a scheduling conflict or personal emergency arises we simply require that you notify us, have another TCP resident cover your shift, and make up your missed outreach hours at a later date.
12. I have been doing community outreach for 1.5 years with multiple venues and would like to know if you would like letters of recommendation from venues within my application?
Although those letters are not required you could include them in the CAP proposal section as testimonials to your outreach experience. Please feel free to submit any documents that will help us better understand your desire to make an impact on your community or demonstrate the impact you have already made.
13. If I am selected as an alternate will I be able to apply for the residency again?
If during the course of the residency the opportunity does not arise for you to move into a studio space you will be able to reapply for the next term.
14. What financial information is required during the selection process?
Although we are looking to support artists in need it is VERY important that you are employed. The rental application portion of the process will require proof of income/funds to ensure you can afford the subsidized rental amount. Your last three months of check stubs and or tax returns can be provided as proof of income, while we will also verify your place of employment. Strong rental references are also preferred.
15. Do you allow roommates?
We do not allow roommates. All individuals receiving a TCP subsidy must go through our application process for approval. This year each residency location will support one artist.
16. Do you allow couples? Are partners allowed to live in the house with residents? (updated 7.8.2014)
As stated above we do want the subsidy to benefit individuals who have been vetted through our review process. We are open to the possibility of a creative couple/team residing in the space as long as you are both committed to the outreach component. Submission options for couples: 1. You may each submit an application yet as one pdf document stating that you are a cohabitating couple/team interested in applying to share the space together.
2. If you apply as an individual fully disclose your intentions to share the space with your partner while engaging them in the outreach component and CAP educationl programming proposal.
17. Do you allow pets?
Generally having pets during the residency is not encouraged. We are extremely grateful for the subsidized leases that have been provided by our generous patrons so we want to make sure their properties are very well maintained. Although we do love pets, they do add to the wear and tear of a property so we prefer a "no pet policy". With all that being said special permission can be granted by the property owner, however, requires an additional pet deposit.
