Adana Tilman

My work bridges the traditional art of quilting into the modern realm with the use of contemporary fabrics and patterns and the exploration of hand-sewn techniques. With a focus on portraits and figures, I like to explore organic and modern shapes while creating depth with pattern design. The vast style of the African diaspora is shown through fashion, hair, and style which can be seen throughout my work. I look to set a light on that individuality of the everyday life of my subjects.

Joseph Veazey

My work has always been about where design, art and concept intersect. I’ve never quite been a graphic designer, nor an illustrator, nor an artist - but some sort of combination of the three. Concept is my driving force, and I find myself using it to create an emotional connection with the viewer – generally through the use of surprise, wonder, or humor. A smart, surprising, tangible idea that I haven’t seen before is what really excites me and makes me the proudest of my work.

Keturah Benson

As a Visual Artist, my intention with my work is to uplift and empower others to pursue their individual purpose. My artwork showcases the beauty and dignity of my people, and I hope to inspire others with my collections. My most recent work is heavily influenced by iconic figures in pop culture. My bold sense of color is deeply rooted in my Liberian heritage. I incorporate textiles from West African countries to remind my audience that Pop Culture has always pointed back to African people.

Sophia Mackey

As an artist with a laundry list of marginalized identities, my goal in creating is to eternalize the complex feelings and ordinary moments of the silenced and the oppressed. Most of my work centers  Black and/or queer individuals from throughout history and present day society. Sometimes, my focus on Blackness and queerness  evolves into cathartic, political work that exposes white supremacy and  other violences done unto the marginalized. Other times, my focus on  marginalized identity means looking through Black archives and  retroactively validating the experiences of my elders through the  recreation of their photographs. Other times, I express my focus  through campy comics that celebrate simple interactions within the  Black and/or queer community. No matter the visual content of my  expression, my intentions and my purpose remain the same: to create  a home for the very valid emotions and experiences of the unheard.

Simpson Street NW. Mural - 2021

After graduating from college in 2019, I became a full-time freelance artist. For me, becoming full-time meant investing all of my time and resources into creating and sharing art with the confidence that it would keep me afloat. I started by building my website into a professional representation of me and my work; doing community portrait sales in my signature artistic styles; and printing, selling, & shipping my own prints. Shortly after making this switch, I was awarded my first mural through Living Walls and Adult Swim. Through the process of designing and painting this mural, I found a love for mural installation. Upon completion, I immediately began searching for more mural opportunities. Shortly after, I completed 2 murals for Stacks Squares and another for Audiomack, all while continuing to work on various personal and commercial commissions. I continue to search for mural opportunities, complete commissioned portraits, and build my brand as SOFAHOOD.

Xavier Lewis

Whether it be dance, composing musical scores, directing, or writing, my main objective is to remain true to the medium and to myself. I want people to walk away with whatever they needed...and if they didn’t need anything, that’s okay too. I don’t really want people to feel anything specific. Whatever happens naturally is fine with me.
